Parksville/Qualicum Beach Tuesday bird walk, March 10,2015

“Birding in the Fog”

The Tuesday bird walk went to Rathtrevor Provincial Park in Parksville. The morning was foggy and the winds were calm. Over one thousand  Dunlin, one hundred Black-bellied Plovers and four Black Oystercatchers were feeding along the tide line and in the tide pools on the shore side of the fog bank. We counted twenty-six Brant also feeding along the tideline. Thousands of  Mew Gulls, California Gulls, Thayer's Gulls, Glaucous-winged Gulls and one Bonaparte's Gull were roosting on a gravel bar just offshore.  Fourteen  Horned Grebes and one Eared Grebe were spotted further swimming offshore. Four Varied Thrush were singing and perched in the forest.

Sunday, March 08, 2015:
The Sunday bird walk went the Buttertubs Marsh in Nanaimo. The morning was cloudy with sunny periods and calm winds. Over ten  Steller’s Jays flew in overhead nosily mobbing some black squirrels.  Just off the trail a Bewick’s Wren was singing . The Marsh Wrens were singing for most of the morning and we got great looks as two of them perched and sang on top cattails.  We watched a  Ruby-crowned Kinglet singing and feeding high up in the trees next to the trail. Violet-green Swallows were flying over the western side of Buttertubs. Two  Tree Swallows were perched preening themselves on a tall snag not far up the trail, giving us great views. The bird of the morning was a Harris’s Sparrow perched on a bare branch just off the trail, not far from Jinglepot Road entrance. The Sparrow turned to face us as we looked at him, giving us time to study him. It was an awesome sight, so close to us.  The Harris’s Sparrow usually winters in the Central Southern USA and is rarely seen in this area.

Sunday, March 01 2015:
The Sunday bird walk went the Nanaimo River Estuary in south Nanaimo. The morning was cloudy with calm winds.  We spotted a Northern Shrike near the start of the walk. The highlight of the morning was the sighting of four migrating Western Meadowlarks perched and singing low on bushes not far from us. They entertained us for a long while as we watched them dive into the grasses and then fly up onto a perch to sing.  We spotted two Red-tailed Hawks courting and landing on a bush giving us great views. A Northern Harrier flew low over the field searching for prey. We spotted him later perched on the big Garry Oak looking down on us.

Tuesday, February 24:
The Tuesday bird walk went to the Little Qualicum River Fish Hatchery in Qualicum Beach. The morning was sunny and the winds were calm, making for a great morning of birding. We spotted two American Dippers feeding along the river bank not far from us. We saw several Red-breasted Sapsuckers feeding and tapping the trees throughout the morning.  A Varied Thrush was singing atop a tall conifer and two other Varied Thrush were answering him as he sang.  American Robins were busy feeding and resting on the grassy area. We spotted a leucistic American Robin--a very colorful bird—scurrying on the ground giving us great views. A flock of Violet-green Swallows flew overhead hawking insects.  A Pileated Woodpecker was busy drumming on a snag near the end of the walk.
