Wednesday June 25, 2025:

Common Nighthawk was seen and heard flying over Departure Bay Road and Granite Park Road.

Tuesday June 24, 2025: 

The Tuesday Bird Walk went to the Shelly Road side of the Englishman River Estuary in Parksville. Weather was sunny and warm, 16C, and the tide was out. A few highlights from the walk were two American Dippers were seen at the bend on the Englishman River Estuary. Red Crossbills were seen atop a tree, great views of the many Chipping Sparrows about and a Humpback Whale.

Sunday June 22, 2025:

The Sunday Bird Walk went to Buttertubs Marsh in Nanaimo. Weather was overcast, and 14C. A few highlights from the walk were a Hairy Woodpecker, Wood Ducks with their young on the marsh and watching the swallows and Purple Martins.

Hutton’s Vireo (R. Hocken)

Tuesday June 17, 2025: 

The Tuesday Bird Walk went to Top Bridge Trail and started from the parking lot on Industrial Way. Weather was overcast to start and 14C. A few highlights from the walk was watching a family of Brown Creepers feeding, a female Red Crossbill perch nicely for us to see and we heard a Hutton’s Vireo and Western Tanager singing.

Sunday June 15, 2025:

The Sunday Bird Walk went to Morden Colliery Historical Provincial Park in south Nanaimo. Weather was sunny and 14C. unfortunately we did not hear or see a Red-eyed Vireo but a few highlights from the walk were Red-breasted Sapsuckers being busy in the trees by the marsh and then a Barred Owl started to call in the same area. Across the river at the end of the trail a Cassin’s Vireo was calling and a Spotted Sandpiper and a Killdeer were seen along the river.

The Tuesday Bird Walk went to Springwood Park in Parksville. Weather was sunny, calm and 15C. A few highlights from the walk were California Quail perched in a tree on watch duty. A few quick views of Swainson’s Thrush and Black-throated Gray Warbler.

The Tuesday Bird Walk went to the Plummer Road side of the Englishman River Estuary in Parksville. Weather was sunny with a light breeze, 14C, and tide was out. A few highlights from the walk were three Spotted Sandpipers seen in the estuary near the mouth of the river. Western and Willow Flycatchers were heard singing and Cedar Waxwings were seen.

A few highlights from the walk was a Virgina Rail calling and seen at the west end of the marsh, a Pied-billed Grebe also vocalizing in the west end of the marsh. Western, Willow, Hammond’s and Olive-sided Flycatchers were heard along with a House Wren.
