Common Loon (R. Hocken)

August 25, 2020:

The Tuesday Bird Walk started off at the Brant viewing stand and then went to the Little Qualicum Fish Hatchery.  The weather was sunny with a very light breeze and 19 degrees. A few of the highlights from the water were, Common Loon, Red-necked Grebe, Pigeon Guillemot, and a family of California Quail next to the viewing stand. At the Little Qualicum Fish Hatchery the highlights were Black-throated Gray Warbler, MacGillivray’s Warbler, Cedar Waxwing and Steller’s Jay.

13 birders saw and heard the following 30 species:

Common Loon

Great Blue Heron

Bald Eagle

Turkey Vulture

California Quail

Bonaparte’s Gull

Glaucous-winged Gull

Pigeon Guillemot

Belted Kingfisher

Anna’s Hummingbird

Sunday August 23, 2020:

The Sunday Bird Walk went to Neck Point Park. Weather was sunny with wind out of the North West and 17 degrees. A few highlights from the walk were Lesser Yellowlegs, Barred Owl and Red Crossbills.

11 birders saw and heard the following 22 species:

Great Blue Heron

Bald Eagle

Turkey Vulture

August 19, 2020:

A Yellow- headed Blackbird was seen on Gordon Road side of the Nanaimo River Estuary in Cedar. Also seen were Eastern Kingbirds that is a continuing bird in the area.

August 16, 2020:

14 Black Oystercatchers were seen feeding in the low tide mud at Piper’s Lagoon and 4 Purple Martins were seen feeding overhead.

The Backyard Bird Walks

Our bird walks go out Sunday mornings in Nanaimo and Tuesday mornings in Parksville and Qualicum Beach area, are easy walks that go for two to three hours (back for lunch is the plan). Bring binoculars and a field guide.

September 1

Will be going to the Englishman River Estuary, Shelly Road.

Meet at the Parksville Tourist Information Center parking lot, located by Hwy 19A, Northwest Bay road and Franklin’s Gull road in Parksville, at 9:00 am or meet at the end of Shelly Road in Parksville at 9:10.

The Sunday Bird Walk

August 23

Will be going to Maki Road Trail.

Meet at The Backyard Wildbird & Nature Store at 9:00am or meet us at the end of Maki Road in south Nanaimo at 9:15.
