Backyard TidBits

The winter weather has the backyard feeders just a hopping. Suet has had lots of activity but unfortunately the starlings are not sharing. One option to help deter or slow down the starlings is with an upside-down suet feeder or rig your suet feeder, so it is horizontal and not vertical. This way the suet is only available underneath. Chickadees, nuthatches, woodpeckers, and Bushtits naturally feed upside down but is tougher for the starlings. It may not get rid of the starlings, but it will slow them down at least.

Anna’s Hummingbirds are busy at the feeders and still being seen taking nesting material. Rufous Hummingbirds are on there way back and if you want to track their where abouts check out Journey North https://maps.journeynorth.org/map/?map=hummingbird-rufous-first&year=2023

to see where they are.

With all the snow now melting remember to clean up any old seed of the ground before it spoils and becomes a problem for the birds.

If you have any birds to report or need help identifying, just email or call the store, thebackyard@shaw.ca or 250-390-3669, toll-free 1-888-808-BIRD (2473).
