The Sunday bird walk went to Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park in Parksville, where the highlight on the sunny, calm wind day was watching a flock of chickadees, a golden-crowned kinglet and a ruby-crowned kinglet bathing in a water puddle along the camp ground road.

Tuesday, January 05 2016

The Tuesday bird walk went to Deep Bay. The morning started out cloudy and cool with calm winds.  Snow started to fall and became very heavy as the morning progressed.  The Strait of Georgia was clouded over with the heavy snow. The Black Scoters were singing for most of the morning.  We saw hundreds of Surf Scoters, White-winged Scoters and Black Scoters just off shore. We were greeted by a large number of Long-tailed Ducks about ten feet off the point, along with a Pigeon Guillemot in winter plumage, making for an exciting bird watching experience.

The Tuesday bird walk went to Columbia Beach. The morning was cloudy with steady rain and a strong wind blasting off the Strait of Georgia, the tide was a strong high king tide. Harlequin Ducks, Surf Scoters, Bufflehead and Common Goldeneye were just offshore swimming in the strong waves playing hide and seek with us. We spotted many flocks of Common Murre and Pacific Loon racing up the strait with the strong wind behind them. Black Oystercatchers, Killdeer, Black Turnstone, Black-bellied Plovers, Gulls and Dunlin were feeding and resting along the gravel bar, as the tide was going out.

Sunday, January 03, 2016

The Sunday bird walk went to Neck Point in Nanaimo. The morning was cloudy and cool with calm winds. We saw the following five species of woodpeckers-Northern Flickers, Downy Woodpeckers, Hairy Woodpeckers and a Red-breasted Sapsucker, during the morning. A Double-crested Cormorant was heading up the Strait of Georgia followed by a Common Murre. A Pelagic Cormorant and a Brandt’s Cormorant roosting on the rocks near the shore. Several male Red-breasted Mergansers were just off shore giving us great views.

A Peregrine Falcon and about 20 Western Meadowlarks were seen at the Nanaimo River Estuary in south Nanaimo. 

Tuesday, December 29 05.

The Tuesday bird walk went to the North Entrance to the Englishman River Estuary off of Mills Road in Parksville. The morning was cloudy with sunny periods and the winds were calm. The highlight of the morning was the sighting of a Common Redpoll perched on top of a tall Cedar Tree not far from the viewing platform. The Redpoll stayed on it’s perch for a long period of time, looking in all directions, and giving us great views!  We saw a female Pine Grosbeak feeding along the Corfield Trail. Ten Western Meadowlarks were perched in a tall deciduous tree near the edge of the estuary on the Community Park side.  A Northern Shrike was also perched in the same area.  We saw a large number of Northern Flickers throughout the morning.  

  Flocks of Brant and Long-tail Ducks flew up the Strait of Georgia.
