Olive-sided Flycatcher (R. Hocken) 

Thursday June 8, 2023:

Olive-sided Flycatcher was heard calling above Cougar Trail Drive in Nanaimo.

Tuesday June 6 , 2023:

The Tuesday birding group went to Top Bridge Trail in Parksville, starting at the Industrial Way entrance. Weather was sunny and 16C. The group followed the trail towards the parking lot at the end of Chattell Road, as the trail towards the Englishman River has been fenced off. A few highlights from the walk were a Townsends Warbler that was feeding in a pine tree and put on a great show up close for us. Cedar Waxwings also put on a good show and there were plenty of American Goldfinch for us to see.

Six birders saw and/or heard the following 32 species:

Sunday June 4, 2023:

The Sunday birding group went to the Beaver Ponds / Enos Lake trails in Nanoose Bay. The weather was sunny and 16C. This walk through the trees meant there was more birding by ear than birds seen. A few highlights from the walk were, Black-throated Gray Warbler, House Wren and a Cedar Waxwing that was seen.

Twelve birders saw and heard the following 29 species:

The Backyard Bird Walks

Our bird walks go out Sunday mornings in Nanaimo and Tuesday mornings in Parksville and Qualicum Beach area, are easy walks that go for two to three hours (back for lunch is the plan). Bring binoculars and a field guide. The walks are weather pending.

The Tuesday Bird Walk, June 13, 2023

The Tuesday Bird Walk will be going to Lot 10 in Qualicum Beach.

Meet at the Parksville Tourist Information Center parking lot, located by Hwy 19A, Northwest Bay Road and Franklin’s Gull Road in Parksville, at 9:00 am or meet at the Brant Viewing Platform at 9:15am and then at the end of Kinkade Road at 9:40am. Weather Cooperating.

The Sunday Bird Walk, June 11, 2023

This week’s Sunday Bird Walk will be going to Buttertubs Marsh in Nanaimo.

Meet at The Backyard Wildbird & Nature Store at 9:00am or at the entrance to the marsh on 2nd avenue by the miner’s shack at 9:15am. Weather cooperating.

For cancelled bird walks due to weather, please check The Backyard blog at www.thebirdstore.blogspot.com on the day of the bird walk. A notice will be up before 8:00am if there is a cancelation.
