Tuesday June 13 , 2023:

The Tuesday birding group went to Lot 10 at the end of Kinkade Road in Qualicum Beach. The weather was sunny with a few clouds and 17C. The group started at the Brant Viewing Platform where 12 species were seen including, Marbled Murrelet, Pigeon Guillemot and Pacific Loon. From there is group went to Lot 10 and were welcomed by Chestnut-backed Chickadees, Red-breasted Nuthatch and Pacific-slope Flycatcher.

Eight birders saw and/or heard the following 36 species, a combination of both locations:

Bald Eagle

Black Oystercatcher

Sunday June 11, 2023:

The Sunday birding group went to Buttertubs Marsh in Nanaimo. The weather was sunny with a steady breeze and 16C. A few highlights from the walk were the Cedar Waxwings, the Pied-billed Grebe young at the nest and a pair of Cinnamon Teal.

Twelve birders saw and heard the following 33 species:

The Backyard Bird Walks

Our bird walks go out Sunday mornings in Nanaimo and Tuesday mornings in Parksville and Qualicum Beach area, are easy walks that go for two to three hours (back for lunch is the plan). Bring binoculars and a field guide. The walks are weather pending.

The Tuesday Bird Walk, June 20, 2023

The Tuesday Bird Walk will be going to the Shelly Road side of the Englishman River Estuary in Parksville.

Meet at the Parksville Tourist Information Center parking lot, located by Hwy 19A, Northwest Bay Road and Franklin’s Gull Road in Parksville, at 9:00 am or meet at the end of Shelly Road off of highway 19A at 9:10am. Weather Cooperating.

The Sunday Bird Walk, June 18, 2023

This week’s Sunday Bird Walk will be going to Neck Point Park in Nanaimo.

Meet at The Backyard Wildbird & Nature Store at 9:00am or at the parking lot of Neck Point Park at 9:15am. Weather cooperating.

These will be our last bird walks before our summer break. We will resume the walks in the late summer or early fall.

For cancelled bird walks due to weather, please check The Backyard blog at www.thebirdstore.blogspot.com on the day of the bird walk. A notice will be up before 8:00am if there is a cancelation.
