Sunday bird walk, January 27, 2019
The
Sunday bird walk went to Buttertubs Marsh in Nanaimo. The morning was foggy with
calm winds. A large number of Ring-necked Ducks, two Canada Geese, a large
number of Mallards, one Wood Duck, one Double-crested Cormorant, one Hooded
Merganser and two Pied-billed Grebes were seen on the marsh. A Sharp-shinned
Hawk was spotted perched on a tree near the trail giving us great views. A Cedar
Waxwing was spotted in a bush next to the trail.

Fourteen birders including visiting birders from Alberta and Washington state saw and heard the following forty species:

Parksville/Qualicum Beach Tuesday bird walk, Englishman
River Estuary, Plummer Road side, January
22, 2019.
The
morning was cloudy with very strong winds. A large number of Northern Pintail, five Gadwall, several
Green-winged Teal and two Common Teal were seen along the mudflats. A
Brandt’s Cormorant, Bufflehead, Common Goldeneye, Red-breasted Merganser,
Common Merganser, Pacific Loon, Common Loon and a large number of Brant were
seen riding the waves on the Strait of Georgia. A large flock of Dunlin
and two Black-bellied Plovers flew over the ocean waves heading down the Strait.
Eighteen birders, including birders from Alberta
and Washington state saw and heard the following forty-eight species:

Monday, January 21:
Hugh flocks of Pine Siskin’s were seen in
Hammond Bay in Nanaimo.
The Dusky Thrush is still being seen in the
fields off Gordon Road in Cedar.

The Tuesday Bird Walk on January 29, 2019 will be going to the
Columbia Beach in French Creek. Meet at the Parksville Community Park (near the Lions Club playground
parking lot) in Parksville at 9:00 am, or at parking area off Admiral
Tryon Boulevard (turn onto Columbia Drive go to the tee intersection and turn
right on Admiral Tryon Boulevard) at about 9:15 am
The Sunday Bird Walk on February 05, 2019l be going to the Nanoose Bay. Meet at the Backyard
Wildbird and Nature Store, 6314 Metral Drive in Nanaimo at 9:00 a.m. or at waterfront
at the church camp in Nanoose Bay ( off highway 19 and Arlington Road) at about
9:15 am.
